Sengen Shrine and Lacquer

In the early Edo period, skilled lacquer craftsmen were gathered for the construction of Sengen Shrine under the orders of the shogunate. The worship hall was entirely coated with lacquer and adorned with gold and silver, creating a luxurious design. To accomplish this work, exceptional lacquer craftsmen from all over Japan were gathered. Even after the completion of the Sengen Shrine, many craftsmen remained in Suruga, preserving their high-level techniques. As a result, Suruga developed into a renowned lacquerware production area.
